Adventure in Tomahawk Cemetery (est. 1870)

Related Post: Cross-Country Adventure Hiatus!

***

Not much happened on the road… But this was the highlight of my cross-country trip!

To my surprise, right next to our hotel in Kansas was this charming 19th-century cemetery. So I thought I’d jump the very short fence with my shiba inu Nikki (who I had to throw over) and have ourselves a little adventure. :)

The most interesting tidbit about Tomahawk Cemetery is that there is a total of 65 marked unknown graves.

During a street widening project in the early 1990s, the City of Overland Park identified 30 obvious graves that would have to be relocated to another area of the cemetery to accommodate utilities. Some graves were missing headstones and many stones were illegible… Some of the graves identified had headstones that were moved, and for those missing headstones, new granite markers were be placed. While moving the graves, a large number of unmarked graves were uncovered, moved, and also marked. –Johnson County KSGenWeb

Death Is No Bad Friend: Scouting Locations in Colfax

This past weekend, my cousin Buzz generously drove me around his backyard in Colfax, California (not far from Sacramento) in order to scout potential locations for my short screenplay Death Is No Bad Friend.

Death Is No Bad Friend is about Robert Louis Stevenson (Treasure Island, Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde) in San Francisco and on Mount Saint Helena. So Buzz’s property would serve as the perfect place to film those mountain forest scenes!

Although it’s in its beginning stages, I’m hoping to fund this film through Indiegogo and work with a number of talented filmmakers I met at the Cannes Film Festival 2013 to bring Death Is No Bad Friend to life. More details to come!

I’m really not an outdoorsy person, so scouting locations like this was a bit crazy for me — especially being the passenger of an off-road vehicle bouncing up and down the mountainside like Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride. But it was definitely worth it!!!

Reader Appreciation Award!

http://thegeektransition.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/reader-appreciation-award.jpeg?w=490&h=364

Wow, I can’t believe I was just nominated for another award — that’s the 3rd one in a very short span of time! I guess my dedication is starting to pay off. :) Feels especially good after receiving a number of various rejections over the past few weeks.

I would like to thank The Geek Transition for nominating me and for these kind words: “She just released a graphic novel called The Poet and The Flea, and I think it’s pretty cool. You can tell she put a lot of work into it. Congrats on the premiere, G.E.!” Thank you very very very much!!

Questions

Your favorite color?

As covered in my post “A Bit More About Me“: Since childhood, I’ve always favored blue. But nowadays everyone would accuse me of being passionate about the color black.

Your favorite animal?

Difficult question! I’m torn between llamas/alpacas, red pandas, and Shiba Inu (if a breed counts as an animal).

Your favorite non-alcoholic drink?

Tea! Especially Earl Grey, Darjeeling, and Chai.

Your favorite number?

I’m not particularly fond of numbers. Though I prefer odd to even — it’s a question of aesthetic!

Your favorite day of the week?

Don’t really have a favorite day. My least favorite day is Wednesday.

Your favorite flower?

I have developed a fascination with the history of tulips after reading The Black Tulip by Alexandre Dumas.

What is your passion?

As you can hopefully tell by my blog, writing and illustrating. Also, Japanese language and culture.

Do you watch television?

I am a junkie for high-quality dramatic series like Boardwalk Empire and Mad Men, including a million BBC shows like The Hour, Whitechapel, and House of Cards. I just fall in love with the brilliant writing, the multidimensional characters, and the amazing actors. I also love really cheesy Japanese dramas — right now, my favorite is Guilty: Akuma to Keiyaku Shita Onna (Guilty: The Woman who Made a Deal with the Devil).

Who is your favorite author?

Another difficult question! Joseph Campbell’s The Hero with a Thousand Faces is practically my bible (I mentioned I’m a Jewish atheist, right?). I’m also quite fond of Robert Graves’s I, Claudius, Alexandre Dumas’s The Count of Monte Cristo, Yukio Mishima’s Spring Snow (Haru no Yuki), E. L. Doctorow’s Ragtime, etcetera, etcetera. My bookshelf looks frighteningly like a Penguin Classics library!

Do you like 80′s movies?

Not particularly. The closest I get are the BBC series Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (1979) and Smiley’s People (1982) starring Alec Guinness. And yes, I also love the 2011 version of  Tinker Tailor.

What social issues bother you?

Oh, don’t even get me started — we’ll be here forever! Just know that I watch The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, and MSNBC (Rachel Maddow, Lawrence O’Donnell, and all of them) religiously.

How do you like your eggs?

Usually, I like them scrambled. But I also like them poached, especially for an Eggs Benedict!

When did you discover blogging?

I truthfully can’t remember exactly. I remember first using a computer when I was 4 years old. And I started using deviantART sometime in middle school, if that counts.

Why do you like to blog?

I don’t always like blogging, but I’ve discovered how incredibly wonderful bloggers are on WordPress. Unlike other social media sites, bloggers here seem to have a bit more etiquette. I enjoy sharing my work and receiving positive feedback from other talented bloggers!

Very Inspiring Blogger Award!

***

I’d like to thank The Rag Tree (cathay12.wordpress.com) very very very much for nominating me for The Very Inspiring Blogger Award!

Here is what RT said about me: “It’s always inspiring to see folks in their 20s emerge into the adult world with lots of energy and verve. Screenwriter, graphic novelist, alternative press enthusiast, Ms. Gallas certainly qualifies as an emerging writer/artist to watch.”

Seven Things About G. E. Gallas

1. I consider myself a “radiant pessimist” — I hope for the best, but expect the worst.

2. I was born in Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D. C., not far from Glen Echo Park.

3. I studied cello for about 12 years, beginning at age 4.

4. I studied Latin for 3 years, but really don’t remember any of it. However, I don’t think it was a waste since I developed a love for etymology and for Robert Graves’s I, Claudius.

5. I have a very eclectic taste in music, ranging from Japanese rock to classical opera.

6. Unlike my older sister, I have a very good sense of direction. I’m not particularly good at reading maps, but if I’ve gone someplace once, I’ll always remember how to get there again.

7. I have a very stubborn and very naughty Shiba Inu (柴犬) named Nikki. Here’s a photograph:

December 9th, 2012

Today, I was nominated again for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award.

I’d like to thank Shohpie (shohpie.wordpress.com) very very very much for nominating me!

Here is what Shohpie said about me: “I honestly don’t know how I came across G. E. Gallas’ blog but I’m glad I did. She’s currently promoting her new graphic novel about William Blake called the Poet and the Flea. She also made me aware of Awkward Shelby, which is one of the best internet comics I’ve ever come across- really silly and simple, just the way I like it. She’s been awarded by other bloggers for her blog twice this month already, and since these things usually come in 3′s why don’t I just round it off here eh?”
