All last week, I was busy putting together “The Ink Drinker” zine and was having a great time doing so. Plus, they’re turning out even better than I expected!

Production of these zines involve printing, folding, hammering, and sewing. Who knew I’d be hammering an awl into my lovely paper zines… with a real, heavy-duty hammer nonetheless!

The covers are printed on 65-pound, nautral-color paper, while the interior pages are printed on 24-pound, white paper. They look really fancy!

Preview of the finished zines coming soon. :)

Upcoming Zines: “The Ink Drinker,” Etc.

The Ink Drinker Title

Over the years, I’ve accumulated a number of short stories. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to submit them to literary journals or put them up on my blog. But my recent discovery of and appreciation for zines led me to find the perfect solution of self-printing/self-publishing.

There are about five short stories from my collection I think I’d like to one by one turn into zines, not necessarily in the following order:

  1. “The Ink Drinker”
  2. “Bludgeoning The Walrus”
  3. “Robots Are a Girl’s Best Friend”
  4. “Ulysses in Hell”
  5. “Go Jump in the Lake”

Each zine will include cover art (illustrated by me, of course), a card stock cover, and will be hand-bound with awl, needle and thread.

I begin with “The Ink Drinker,” a dystopian story about a young girl who learns the truth about an outcast of society. This story is somewhat influenced by Mervyn Peake’s Gormenghast and illustrations, possibly some Edgar Allan Poe and definitely some Edward Lear among other things.

I’ve always wanted to continue or expand upon this story (as a novel, graphic novel, or screenplay), but haven’t had the chance yet. So I thought I’d share it with all of you as it is now for the time being. :)

You can expect “The Ink Drinker” up on my store (thepoetandtheflea.storenvy.com) once it opens!!

I am very pleased to announce that my first zine is finally in production!!! I’m currently assembling a number of copies to sell at various expos/fests/conventions I’ll be attending later this year as well as for my upcoming online store (which I’m hoping to launch sometime this summer).

As I mentioned before, my first zine is an illustrated Pre-Raphaelite poem. The poem will remain a secret until closer to the zine’s release. But I’ll give one free copy to the first person who can correctly guess which poem it is.

No one has yet to guess the correct poem, so here we are at round three! Therefore, I’ve added a few more hints (#6 and #7) I hope will help quickly determine a winner. :)

Hint #1: The Seven Deadly Sins.

Hint #2: The poem is not “Goblin Market” by Christina Rossetti.

Hint #3: More specifically than Hint #1 — The Seven Princes of Hell.

Hint #4: More specifically than Hint #3 — Mammon.

Hint #5: The poem was written by ONE of the three original Pre-Raphaelites— either William Holman HuntJohn Everett Millais, or Dante Gabriel Rossetti.

Hint #6: More specifically than Hint #5 — the poem was written by Dante Gabriel Rossetti.

Hint #7: The title of the poem begins with the letter “S.”

Note: Yes, you are very much welcome to use Google or any other internet resource to find your answer!!!

For a chance to win, either leave a comment below or (if you’d like to keep your guess secret from other contestants) shoot me an e-mail at gegallas@hotmail.com — subject “First Zine Contest.”

Best of luck!!

David’s Questions

1. What encouraged you to start blogging (honestly)?

I wanted to share my work with the world. :)

2. Heart broken or never touched. Would you rather risk it all for love or not at all?

Neither. I’m not a romantic. But I have a wonderful boyfriend!

3. What is your favourite medium to write, paint, draw or generally create with?

Difficult question. If I could only have one implement, I would choose a black felt-tip pen.

4. I love to day dream (but I’m also very proactive ). Are you a dreamer?

A dreamer, yes. But also a “radiant pessimist” — I hope for the best, but expect the worst.

5. Skipping this question.

6. If you were an artist, living or deceased, who would you be?

Myself. Not that I’m “the best” artist — I just have no desire to be anyone else.

7. In answering 6, do you think you have the qualities to do that person justice?

I hope I do myself justice.

8. What is your favourite hot drink?

Chai.

9. What quality do you admire most in people?

Determination and ambition without being self-absorbed.

10. Did you believe I was a bear (ggrr bear)?

Frankly, no.

11. I love imperfection, to me it is true beauty. What do you love?

Creativity and culture.

3. Do you believe ? (The cardigans – Do you believe?) Not so much.

4. Are we safer or in danger? ( Otep – Confrontation) I’m guessing “in danger.”

5. Can anybody help me make it better? (BFMV – Tears don’t fall) Err…

6. Do you have an opinion? (Garbage – Special) Yes.

7. What was said about this man? ( Chevelle – sma, the man can be anyone you want) What man? Who?

Comics I Admire: “A Space Boy Dream”

A while ago, I stumbled across A Space Boy Dream, a wonderfully clever and charming webcomic by Moira Zahra and Mark Scicluna.

Somehow, my first experience of  A Space Boy Dream was somewhere in the middle of the comic and out of order. But I immediately perceived Moira and Mark’s refreshingly satirical portrayal of hipsters, struggling artists, and the average young person. Not only can I relate to the plight of the angsty and self-concious protagonist Vincent, but I also marvel in the amazingly expressive character designs and unique design aesthetic of this comic.

I didn’t realize until later that the artists live in and portray the Mediterranean island of Malta!! This fact went completely over my head because A Space Boy Dream‘s hipsters are identical to the ones I’ve encountered in Manhattan, San Francisco, and across the U.S. in general. I guess some components of society and subculture are far more universal than I originally imagined.

The following images belong to Moira Zahra and Mark Scicluna.
