Experience of Smudge Comics Arts Expo 2014

Smudge was an interesting experience. Firstly, it was held in a very lovely space in the Artisphere. And, because it was only one day (rather than the usual two), it was pretty crowded throughout the whole event. The one thing that drove me crazy though was that they played soundtrack music consisting primarily of Darth Vader’s theme for most of the day for no apparent reason. But overall I met some nice people who I’ll most likely see again at SPX in September and discovered that there’s a lot of interest in Scared Stiff. :)

I’ve completed my illustration of Saint Tewdrig for A Raven Above Press’s Age of Saints: An Illustrated Guide to the Saints of Wales by Peter Anthony Freeman. I can’t share the final version with you yet, but I thought I’d give you all an idea of the color palette. I’m so excited to see the completed book, which I believe is scheduled to be released this coming March! :D

My Name and Art on Amazon!

This past Summer, I worked on a number of projects for Zest Books. And I’m excited to see my work starting to pay off!

Now on Amazon, you can view the cover illustration I created for Scared Stiff: 50 Phobias That Freak Us Out as well as my name with the credit “illustrator.” In addition to the cover, I created 50 interior illustrations — one for each phobia. So I hope this book will be a real treat for my fans and followers.

Scared Stiff will be released February 4th, 2014, but you can already pre-order via Amazon! Plus, as we near February, I plan on sharing some behind-the-scenes “Phobias” sketches, so keep your peepers peeled!!!

SPX was a surreal experience — so many exhibitors and attendees, it was sensory overload for everyone!

Unfortunately, I didn’t sell as much as I had hoped. But I did pass out a couple hundred postcards, so that was an accomplishment!

The best part — I met so many amazing artists and hope to keep in touch with them. Maybe I’ll see them again at SPX 2014?

Very special thanks to my friend Tina Lee! We’ve been friends since high school and have kept in touch over the years even though I’ve moved away from Maryland. Tina let me crash at her place, share a table with her and her college friends, drove me around, and even cooked dinner for me. So many thanks to Tina! :D

Desmond Seymour and Jade F. Lee.

Here is my high school friend Jade F. Lee and her collaborator Desmond Seymour. I had a good time venting about racism/anti-semitsim/sexism/political correctness with them over dinner. Also, I thought it was cute that Jade’s mom stopped by my table and bought a button. :)

My neighbors Henry Eudy, Kelly Williams, and Christian Sager

These guys were the best! I had a lot of fun chatting with them, and I think they were kind of surprised that I had similar tastes in film, etc. as them. :) We ended up trading zines/comics at the end, which was wonderful. Hope to see them at SPX 2014!

Nepali-American illustrator Anuj Shrestha.

I kept passing Anuj’s table and just couldn’t resist buying all three volumes of Genus. I think his flower-headed characters are so cool and really admire the two-page spreads in each volume. I think he was a bit surprised by my enthusiasm, ha ha ha.

While exploring the floor, I spotted a man carrying two copies of Little Fish, published by Zest Books (where I interned/for whom I am doing some freelance illustrations). I felt a little silly not knowing that Ramsey Beyer was attending SPX, but now that I knew I wanted to introduce myself. Ramsey was really sweet and even bought a copy of The Ink Drinker! Liz Prince, who I believe Zest Books would like to publish, was also there — so I was excited to meet her too.

Work in Progress: Saint Tewdrig

The other day, I started working on my Saint Tewdrig illustration for A Raven Above Press’s Age of Saints: An Illustrated Guide to the Saints of Wales.

The illustration isn’t due for a few months, so I have lots of time to perfect the image. I recently learned that the book with be in full color and that each illustration with have it’s own page, so that’s very exciting. :)

I really like how Saint Tewdrig is turning out so far, and I can’t wait to experiment with color!!!

A Raven Above Press’s Welsh Saints Project

Related Post: Experience of APE.

***

Last October, while attending APE (Alternative Press Expo), I visited A Raven Above Press‘s table and met owner Lorin Morgan-Richards. I was thrilled when he contacted me this April, inviting me to be one of a number of artists to illustrate a book on the history of Welsh Saints!!

This book is one in a series of Welsh art books published by A Raven Above Press and will be released at the 2014 Los Angeles St. David’s Day Festival – National Day of Wales. It will be researched and written by Peter Anthony Freeman and will feature illustrations from about 30 talented artists from the U.S. and Wales. I am very excited to participate in this project and can’t wait to see how the finished product turns out! :)

In June, I finally received the list of saints for the artists/illustrators to choose from and was pleased to find a number of very intriguing choices. In the end, I choose Saint Tewdrig for the following legend:

“On returning to secular service due to military necessity, Tewdrig is given the prophecy that he will be successful but will be mortally wounded; that a vehicle pulled by two stags, yoked, will appear and carry him towards his destination of Ynys Echni, but that he will die in peace three days after the battle. Wherever the stags halted, fountains gushed forth, but as they approached The Severn the wagon was broken, a very clear stream gushed forth and here Tewdrig died.”

The deadline for my illustration is January 1st, 2014 — so I have plenty of time to research and experiment!

Zines and Me!

Rough sketch for zine idea.

As I mentioned before (here), I’ve only recently become interested in the world of zines. Not only do zines appear to be an incredibly flexible channel for creativity, but I think that this medium would be a great compliment to my graphic novels and children’s books. I like the idea of the zine being very hands on — a real artist book, the artist not only illustrating, but also cutting and pasting the finished pamphlet together. This process reminds me greatly of Andy Warhol, his factory, and 25 Cats Name Sam and One Blue Pussy.

Before I begin any zines of my own, I’ve been trying to get a better sense of their mercurial world. At APE (Alternative Press Expo) 2012, I talked with Tugboat Press, who produce annual free comics and an anthology called Papercutter. Tugboat led me to Parcell Press, who seems to carry a vast array of zines, comics, etc. I also found “How to Make a Zine” on Rookie. I guess the one true rule of creating zines is that there are no rules!

As I ponder the pre-existing zine world, my own ideas for zines just keep pouring out of me. I scribble these ideas down furiously in a Gallatin notebook I received upon graduation and was saving for something important (who knew that important something was zines). Endless ideas — everything from opera parodies to The Death of Chatterton. I’m not sure when I’ll actually have time to realize these zines since I’m already working on so many projects that need to get done (The Poet and the Flea, The First Reich, etcetera, etcetera). I’m hoping to take a stab early next year, June at the latest. We’ll see how that works out…

Some useful zine-related websites I’ve discovered:

Plus, I figure if I make enough zines, then eventually I can release them all in one book.

Any comments, suggestions, or thoughts would be truly appreciated!
