Upcoming Zines: “The Ink Drinker,” Etc.

The Ink Drinker Title

Over the years, I’ve accumulated a number of short stories. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to submit them to literary journals or put them up on my blog. But my recent discovery of and appreciation for zines led me to find the perfect solution of self-printing/self-publishing.

There are about five short stories from my collection I think I’d like to one by one turn into zines, not necessarily in the following order:

  1. “The Ink Drinker”
  2. “Bludgeoning The Walrus”
  3. “Robots Are a Girl’s Best Friend”
  4. “Ulysses in Hell”
  5. “Go Jump in the Lake”

Each zine will include cover art (illustrated by me, of course), a card stock cover, and will be hand-bound with awl, needle and thread.

I begin with “The Ink Drinker,” a dystopian story about a young girl who learns the truth about an outcast of society. This story is somewhat influenced by Mervyn Peake’s Gormenghast and illustrations, possibly some Edgar Allan Poe and definitely some Edward Lear among other things.

I’ve always wanted to continue or expand upon this story (as a novel, graphic novel, or screenplay), but haven’t had the chance yet. So I thought I’d share it with all of you as it is now for the time being. :)

You can expect “The Ink Drinker” up on my store (thepoetandtheflea.storenvy.com) once it opens!!

My screenplay Death Is No Bad Friend is one of 292 qualifiers (semi-finalists) in the Kaos Films British Short Screenplay Competition 2012. (This means my script will most likely be read by judge Sir Kenneth Branagh!!) The finalists should be announced sometime around January. Awesome!

Disclaimer: I do not own any of these bat photographs!!

Tuesday, August 7th

  1. Today, had lunch with the lovely Tina C.  She’s a really smart and wonderful lady. She gave me some helpful advice about The JET Programme (something I may do in the future) and the JLPT Japanese Language Proficiency Test (something I’ve been considering). We ended up speaking English with a bunch of random Japanese words thrown in (●´∀`●). I’m not sure if she’ll be staying in SF, but I hope we can become friends!
  2. Lately, been trying to practice my Japanese language skills thanks to my new iPad!  Downloaded the app “iBunkoHD” to read literature in the original Japanese (Akutagawa Ryūnosuke, Natsume Sōseki, Dazai Osamu, etc.). Downloaded another app “Japanese Advanced Phrases” to practice newspaper terms, 四字熟語 (yojijukugo: a word consisting of four kanji), idioms, etc.

Brief Update

Here is a brief update on my current creative projects and endeavors…!

  1. Tuesday, had successful first meeting with my director Cassie Jaye for our short film Robots Are a Girl’s Best Friend!! Had a chance to bounce ideas off each other, and currently working on revising the script. Planning on filming sometime after September. Wow!!!!!
  2. Didn’t get in to the Provincetown Writing Fellowship. But I’m more than okay with that. I was worried that, if I were to get in, that the fellowship would interfere with my involvement in Robots Are a Girl’s Best Friend. Now, I can dedicate myself fully to this film project!
  3. The Poet and the Flea: 27 pages of written script (1 page of script = 4-6 illustrated pages), and about 26 pages (1-5 completed, and 6-26 in progress) of illustrated work. Would like to begin scanning pages soon — must experiment with my temperamental scanner.
  4. Except for a few issues, my homepage has been revamped… Check it out!
  5. My best friends Ariel (from New York) and Olivia (from Texas) are visiting the first few days of June!! So we’ll be running around San Francisco, doing lots of touristy things. Can’t wait!

Brief Update

Here is a brief update on my current creative projects and endeavors…!

  1. Last week, completed 7 page script for Robots Are a Girl’s Best Friend. Have important meeting scheduled for this week. I suppose this is the beginning of pre-production? Very, very, very excited!
  2. The Poet and the Flea: 26 pages of written script (1 page of script = 4-6 illustrated pages), and about 24 pages (1-5 completed, and 6-24 in progress) of illustrated work.
  3. Introducing thepoetandtheflea.wordpress.comI wasn’t very happy with how my images were showing up on the Wix site I created [sorry, Wix!], so I decided to post the graphic novel on a sister wordpress blog! I think the formatting will be a lot easier to navigate and a lot simpler to update. We’ll see how it goes!

  4. On the other hand, working on completely revamping homepage [yay, Wix!]. Adding more information/summaries about my various projects.
  5. Sunday, applied to Kaos Films’s 2012 British Short Screenplay Competition. Submitted 14 page screenplay entitled Death Is No Bad Friend, inspired by the life and works of Robert Louis Stevenson. I’m very excited about the judges (Kenneth Branagh might read by screenplay!) as well as the prize (“The winner… will have their screenplay produced by Kaos Films. It will be premiered at BAFTA…, entered into film festivals around the world before being screened in selected cinemas in the UK.”). Wish me luck! Information updated on “Applications” post, here.
