OCTOBER 17th THROUGH 19th!

Birthday NYC 22

Since my dad had some free hotel nights, my parents, sister, and I visited New York to celebrate my mom’s birthday and mine!

*************************

Havana Central: We were all starving by the time we got to Havana Central, so the food tasted especially good. I’ve been to this restaurant once before and it has such a great ambiance — now it feels like being on the set of Boardwalk Empire season 5! Plus, since it was an off time, it wasn’t as noisy as it can be.

Hedwig and the Angry Inch: This was my official birthday present! I’ve loved Hedwig ever since I saw the movie in 2001. We were only a few rows back, dead center, just far enough away to avoid being spit on. Michael C. Hall was absolutely incredible in the role and Lena Hall was perfect as Yitzhak. This was truly a once in a lifetime experience!

MoMA:

These were two truly inspiring exhibits! If you have a chance to visit NYC before March, I would seriously encourage you to go. :D

*************************

Blue Fin: One of my family’s favorite NYC restaurants — we always seem to go here on family trips. They have the most amazing sushi!

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time: Another amazing Broadway show. I read the book when it first came out, and they did a fabulous job translating the book to stage. :)

Although I was skeptical beforehand, I had an absolute blast at DC Zinefest! I sold way more than I ever imagined I would and I met so many awesome people.

I sat next to Santiago “Santi” Casares (Chili’s World), who was wonderful! We chatted through the whole event and looked after each other’s tables. I even picked up one of his mini-comics to add to my zine collection. :) Santi also told me about DC Conspiracy and Magic Bullet, both of which I’d love to get involved with.

Jonas (Bad Liver and A Broken Heart, Cheer The Eff Up) sat on my other side — he seemed like a DC Zinefest celebrity!!! I didn’t talk to him until the very end, but he was really great and we even exchanged zines. Can’t wait to take a look at his work!

Surprisingly, Ramsey Beyer (Little Fish) was there. I thought I would see her at SPX since I saw her there last year, but there she was. And it turns out she won’t be at SPX this year, so I’m glad to have seen her.

It was awesome meeting Robert Mitchell Jr. :D He writes fiction and draws comics, but is also into martial arts! He also gave me a bunch of his zines including a 44-page comic called Cabal Fang, in which he combines all of his interests. I’m excited to take a closer look!

C.S. Malerich of The 13th Faery, who I met earlier this year at the Smudge Comics Arts Expo, was tabling for the first time. I was very excited to get my hands on a copy of The 13th Faery’s first zine Raiders from the North, or From Eeeeeek to Zut! You can also check out her work at csmalerich.com.

Map

This is incredibly out of the blue, but I’m moving back to the East Coast!

Long story short, I’m helping my parents move from San Francisco back to Maryland, so I’m going too. Although it’s a bit bittersweet, I’m happy about this move since D.C. seems a bit more active in film compared to San Francisco. AND I’ll be much closer to NYC, which has a ton of film and filmmakers. Eventually, once I have saved up some money, I’m actually thinking of moving to Brooklyn. But, for the meantime, D.C. it is! :D

With that being said, I’m still 100% committed to filming Death Is No Bad Friend in San Francisco and Northern California. So when we get funded, I’ll just fly back and stay with relatives!!

We will be traveling from Friday, November 1st through Thursday, November 12th, stopping in Kansas City, Missouri for a few days to visit my bubbie. Here’s our schedule…

  1. San Francisco, California
  2. San Jose, California
  3. Laughlin, Nevada
  4. Albuquerque, New Mexico
  5. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
  6. Kansas City, Missouri
  7. Effingham, Illinois
  8. Reynoldsburg, Ohio
  9. Washington, D.C./Gaithersburg, Maryland

I’m guessing I’ll have pretty sporadic internet connection along the way, so I probably won’t have time to post anything here. But I might have a tweet or two. I’ll try to take some photos along the way and share them will all of you!

See you mid-November,

G. E.
