We have already raised about $3,000 last year, but need at least twice as much to really do this project justice. Siren’s Gaze Productions is a production company that was born at the 2013 Cannes International Film Festival as a collaboration between three young, unique and ambitious female filmmakers — Mary Lachapelle, Jacqueline Lehr, and G. E. Gallas. Each of us has an undying passion for our expertise. Yet our individual personalities fit together to form an intuitive and vibrant production team. Our goal for our first production Death Is No Bad Friend is that we engage our strengths and talents into a seamless, beautiful piece of art.

Death Is No Bad Friend is a short film based on the life and works of Robert Louis Stevenson (The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Treasure Island). We believe that Robert Louis and Fanny Stevenson’s story is historically and culturally significant, and therefore should be celebrated through the medium of cinema. Our greatest goal is to create an outstanding film to submit to festivals around the world (Cannes, Sundance, etc.) and to launch the careers of all cast and crew involved.

SUMMARY: San Francisco, California, 1880 — Robert Louis Stevenson is distraught by the illness of his landlord’s young child. Louis finds himself unable to put pen to paper and drowns his sorrows in laudanum. He turns to the child’s doctor for hope, but finds none. Louis’s thoughts turn to his ordeal of traveling across America to San Francisco in pursuit of Fanny Van de Grift Osbourne. He remembers feverishly writing his friend Edmund Gosse and is troubled by visions of a brutal fire. Reunited, Louis proposes to Fanny that they marry as soon as possible and honeymoon on Mount Saint Helena. But Louis is plagued with unbridled guilt and a sudden episode of illness forces him to face his demons.

Death Is No Bad Friend will explore Robert Louis Stevenson’s relationships, illness, and literary genius through the lens of a short period in his life. We hope to capture a strong sense of time and place as well as show a side of R.L.S. most people are unfamiliar with. Rather than a biopic, this film is is a historically-based character study trying to recreate for audiences the man R.L.S. once was. We hope to capture his dry, subtle, even sarcastic humor that features in his letters but is somewhat absent from his famous works. Although he was a very ill man for the entirety of his short life, he was somehow still able to find the humor in it. Creating this film is an opportunity to celebrate what R.L.S. has given all of us and to bring him into the minds and hearts of new audiences.

Death Is No Bad Friend will be filmed in the San Francisco Bay Area, in a number of Victorian houses and outdoor spaces, with beautiful period costumes and a very talented cast and crew. We have been working on pre-production for a number of months now, planning out all technical and artistic aspects of our film. We will be using Blackmagic Cinema 2.5k and 4k cameras, filming over a period of 10 days. We have planned everything out down to the last detail, so now we just need the funds to make our film a reality!

We ask for a minimum of $2,500 to get us started, but we really need up to $38,550 to fully fund the production, post-production and distribution of this film. In the event that we overfund this project, the remaining funds will go towards the distribution of this film as well as towards helping Siren’s Gaze Productions develop our next project. Through funding Death Is No Bad Friend, you will be helping a group of young creatives take their first big step in achieving their lifelong dreams of becoming professional filmmakers.
