Hiatus: Summer 2015

Screen Shot 2015-05-22 at 12.41.21 PM

As you may know, for the next 6-7 weeks, I will be in New York City to attend the Summer Publishing Institute (SPI) at New York University: School of Professional Studies. This is supposed to be a very intense program, so I’ve decided to put this blog on hiatus while I’m attending.

Don’t worry: I plan on continuing to post on Twitter (@gegallas) and Facebook (facebook.com/gegallas) throughout the coming weeks. Also, once the hiatus is over, I have a number of exciting posts I’ll be able to share with you, including:

  • Photos of my adventures in New York City!

  • New behind-the-scenes images from my graphic novel The Poet and the Flea!

  • Never before seen illustrations from various projects!

  • …and much, much more!!!

Many thanks to my followers for all your support! I’ll be back soon! :)

–G. E.

I had a wonderful time in New Haven a few weeks ago to see my sister’s costumes in a new play called Deer and the Lovers by Emily Zemba and directed by Sara Holdren. :)

Last month, I went up to Yale with my parents to see my sister’s amazing costumes in Molière’s Don Juan. She gave us a fun tour of her studio, costume shop, and class rooms as well as a good portion of campus. It was great running into a number of actors I saw in plays when I was at Yale in December. We may go up again in the Spring to see more of my sister’s shows. :)

  1. Finish illustrating volume one (first 94 pages) of The Poet and the Flea (before summer 2015).
  2. Use Kickstarter as a way for everyone to preorder The Poet and the Flea volume one.
  3. Have The Poet and the Flea volume one printed at a local company.
  4. Hopefully get into a summer publishing program at either NYU or Columbia: I’ve been working on the applications for both programs and plan to finish them in January to send them out ASAP. I have no idea if I’ll get in, but I feel I’d learn so many useful skills if I did. If I don’t get in this year, I’ll try again next year.
  5. Next semester, take “Publication Design with InDesign” course at Montgomery College: I’ve already registered!! :) Class begins at the end of January and I hope to learn a lot.
  6. Get back to work on The First Reich: I really haven’t been able to make as much progress as I had hoped on this graphic novel, so I’d really like to dedicate some time to get at least a good chunk done.
  7. Finally go into production for short film Death Is No Bad Friend: We (Siren’s Gaze Productions) plan to launch a Hatchfund crowdfunding campaign starting January 1st and we will continue to apply to grants to try to fund the rest of the film. I have been working on this film since 2012 and would love to see all our hard work pay off!
  8. Exhibit at SPX 2015 (to debut The Poet and the Flea volume one): If all goes well with #1-3 , I’d like to debut The Poet and the Flea volume one at SPX 2015. The Poet and the Flea volume one will be the first book published through my own small publishing company Radiant Pessimist Press (see #9).
  9. Launch Radiant Pessimist Press: If all goes well with #1-3 and #8, then I plan on not only publishing more of my own work through Radiant Pessimist Press, but also I’d like to recruit some fellow artists/graphic novelists to publish their work.
  10. Continue practicing Japanese: I’ve been studying Japanese for over 12 years now and I’d like to continue practicing my skills. I’d like to continue watching Japanese movies and television and start reading more books in Japanese. :D

Update

  1. I’ve been working very hard on new pages (41 through 95) of The Poet and the Flea for the past few months! I’ve completed the first few steps on pgs. 41 through 71 and completed inking pgs. 41 through 48. I haven’t started shading any of the new pages, but I’m hoping to start very soon.
  2. Last week, I completed and submitted my illustration of Elias Morris for A Raven Above Press’s new book Welsh in the Old West by Lorin Morgan-Richards. Check out this previous post for more information: A Raven Above Press’s “Welsh in the Old West” Project.
  3. I’m almost done inking an one-page comic entitled Strange But True to submit to a local newspaper. I really like how it’s turning out so far, and I’m hoping they’ll accept my submission! And maybe I’ll do more pages of Strange But True down the line…
  4. I’m supposed to hear this Wednesday whether or not I’ve been hired for a somewhat big freelance illustration project for a non-profit related book. I was hired to create a proposal for the book and they seem to be very excited about what I put together. Fingers crossed! :)
  5. According to director Mary Lachapelle, Death Is No Bad Friend made it to the top 20 of the Roy W. Dean Grant. Unfortunately, we were not grant winners, but they seem to want to still give us some kind of assistance for the film. Plus, we now know we’re headed in the right direction for other grants we’re planning on applying to. Everything’s coming together!
  6. Last week, I registered for the “Publication Design w/In Design” course at our local community college. I took a few classes there during high school and found them very beneficial. So I look forward to adding In Design to my list of skills.
  7. I’ve begun working on the applications for two summer programs specializing in publishing. They aren’t due until early next year, but I’d like to get them out of the way ASAP. They sound like absolutely amazing programs and, if I don’t get into them this time around, I’m planning on reapplying next year. We’ll see what happens!
  8. I’ve been doing some research and making some notes for my (not-so-distant) future publishing company Radiant Pessimist Press. It’s only bare bones for now, but you can check out my new blog: radiantpessimist.wordpress.com.
  9. Yesterday, I finally was able to clean and organize my studio. Can’t wait to get back to work!
  10. My main goal this week is to really sit down and concentrate on preparing for my talk at Yale University School of Drama. Also, I made an appointment with the Yale Center for British Art’s study room to examine a sampling of their incredible collection of original William Blake prints. I can’t wait!
