Siren’s Gaze Productions (sirensgazeproductions.wordpress.com) was born at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival as a collaboration between three young, unique, and ambitious female filmmakers — director Mary Lachapelle, cinematographer Jacqueline Lehr, and screenwriter/producer G. E. Gallas. Each of us has an undying passion for our expertise. Yet our individual personalities fit together to form an intuitive and vibrant production team.

Death Is No Bad Friend is a short film based on the life and works of Robert Louis Stevenson (The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr HydeTreasure Island). Robert Louis attempts to escape his guilty conscience through honeymooning on Mount Saint Helena. But his illness catches up, forcing him to face his demons.

This film is Siren’s Gaze Productions’ first project. We believe that Robert Louis and Fanny Stevenson’s story is historically and culturally significant, and therefore should be celebrated through the medium of cinema. Our greatest goal is to create an outstanding film to submit to festivals around the world (Cannes, Toronto, Sundance, etc.) and to launch the careers of all cast and crew involved.

We are all 100% committed to this project. We are prepared to make this film on a shoestring budget, donating our time and skills. But every penny counts! We are hoping to raise between $10,000 and $25,000 to allow us to bring Death Is No Bad Friend to life.

We need YOU to support our production expenses and to spread the word. Through funding and promoting Death Is No Bad Friend, you will help us bring the unfamiliar and extraordinary life of the famous writer Robert Louis Stevenson into the public eye. Moreover, you will be helping a group of young creatives take their first big step in achieving their lifelong dreams of becoming professional filmmakers!

Screenplay:

  • 2nd round qualifier in the Kaos Films British Short Screenplay Competition 2012, judged by Sir Kenneth Branagh.
  •  Quater finalist in the 2013 CWA (Creative World Awards).
  • Death Is No Bad Friend is a poetic script that relies on imagery to evoke a morose feeling. The language is very well-crafted, with the characters’ style of speech accurate for the time period. Because the descriptions are succinct but also written in a similar style, the script reads easily and quickly while creating clear images of the locations.” –Feedback from the 2014 BlueCat Screenplay Competition.
  • Genre: Drama, Historical, Biographical.

Cast & Crew:

Goals:

Your contributions will help us achieve the following goals…

  • To successfully develop Death Is No Bad Friend through pre-production, filming, and post-production.
  • To celebrate the historical and cultural significance of Robert Louis and Fanny Stevenson.
  • To create a high production value, historically accurate, collaborative film.
  • To film in and around the San Francisco Bay Area/Northern California.
  • To submit the finished film to a number of festivals including the Cannes Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, and Toronto International Film Festival.
  • To create an opportunity to expand Death Is No Bad Friend into a full-length script/feature film to further celebrate the historical and cultural significance of Robert Louis and Fanny Stevenson.
  • To create further opportunities for Siren’s Gaze Productions to create films and further the careers of all cast and crew involved.

WE TRULY APPRECIATE YOUR SUPPORT!

KEEP YOUR PEEPERS ON THIS PAGE FOR THE LAUNCH OF OUR INDIEGOGO CAMPAIGN!

Cannes/London 2013: Pre-Travel Planning

Related Posts: I’m Going To Cannes!!! and Trying to Figure Out London!

***

So far, my pre-travel planning has consisted of trying to buy/prepare/organize everything on an endless checklist of miscellaneous thingamajigs as well as figure out how I’m going to utilize my short stay in London. I have next to zero idea of what I’ll be doing when I actually get to Cannes, but I just have to relax and hope that the American Pavilion has all of that covered.

Admittedly, I am not the most fashionable person in the universe. But I really do try — especially when I know my destination is the Cannes Film Festival, where the chicest of the chic congregate every May.

Here, I thought I’d share some of the fashion items I’ll be taking with me. 😀 Also, I’d like a chance to promote some of the awesome Etsy vendors I’ve encountered along the way.

Nicole Lebreux: Original Apparel/Handmade Womenswear

I bought this amazing maxi dress by Nicole Lebreux a few months ago. I was struggling to find a maxi dress that fit not only my shape but personality, which turned out to be an impossible feat on sites like Macy’s, etc. So I turned to Etsy, and discovered this incredible store. Nicole was extremely helpful, answered all my questions, and even customized the dress to fit my needs. I just can’t wait to wear this at Cannes!!!

Monday Morning Studios: Purses/Handbags/Totes, made in the USA

For Cannes, I decided I needed a pretty big purse, both stylish and more importantly sturdy in case I need to stuff some screenplays and/or an extra set of clothes into it. Also, I didn’t want to spend too much money, definitely no more than $100. So I decided to try Etsy again, and stumbled across another amazing store. Monday Morning Studios makes an assorment of purses/handbags/totes in all different shapes, colors, patterns, etc. And all for less than $100! I bought a really neat hobo purse in an awesome jewel-tone plaid. Now I just have to figure out how much weight I can carry…

Some accessories to help me along the way.

And some cute warm-weather shoes.

Now I just have to figure out how it’s all going to fit in my suitcase!

Myself. Not that I’m “the best” artist — I just have no desire to be anyone else.

I hope I do myself justice.

8. What is your favourite hot drink?

Comics I Admire: “Frolic”

Today, I wanted to share the work of the extremely talented Ryan Thompson.

I befriended Ryan back in July through Twitter — I followed him, he followed me back, and then we got to chatting a bit. He told me how he’d learned a lot from the first webcomic he did and was starting a new project “from the ground up.”

And that new project turned out to be a fantastic webcomic named Frolic

In short, Frolic is a fairy tale about an animated doll who finds herself in a nightmarish world. Frolic just recently premiered (only 10 pages up online so far), but anyone can tell Ryan has invested a lot of time and effort into this project. And his dedication is clearly paying off! Frolic has a wonderfully unique and quirky style, set (at least so far) is beautiful shades of pink and blue to compliment its intriguing premise.

Meanwhile, you can catch up on Ryan’s first webcomic called Fajita. Fajita is fun and action-packed, following the adventures of a strange girl named Widow and a possibly stranger girl named Shea. There’s a whopping total of 448 pages thus far, so you’ll have a lot to read while waiting for a new page of Frolic each Monday.

Below are a number of my favorite images/pages from Frolic.

The following images belong to Ryan Thompson.
