Last month, I went up to Yale with my parents to see my sister’s amazing costumes in Molière’s Don Juan. She gave us a fun tour of her studio, costume shop, and class rooms as well as a good portion of campus. It was great running into a number of actors I saw in plays when I was at Yale in December. We may go up again in the Spring to see more of my sister’s shows. :)

The other day, I received an e-mail informing me my one-page comic entitled Strange But True will be appearing in Magic Bullet #10! Magic Bullet is “…Washington, D.C.’s free comics newspaper published by D.C. Conspiracy, a comics creators’ collective in the capital region.” According to the e-mail, #10 has been put together and sent to the printer, and should be ready by the end of the month. :) Here’s a little preview of my comic…

I had a wonderful time at Yale this past December. I was there as a guest speaker for Wendall K. Harrington’s “Visual Storytelling” course at the School of Drama and also to visit my sister, who’s a grad student there.

I was lucky enough to be able to visit The Yale Center for British Art before it closed for renovations. There, I saw one of my favorite paintings: Henry Wallis’s The Death of Chatterton. I was also able to take advantage of their study room, where I examined original prints of William Blake’s America a Prophecy and Jerusalem.

I had a great time at the Yale University Art Gallery, where I saw John Everett Millais’s beautiful Yes or No? and Hieronymus Bosch’s An Allegory of Intemperance (which I had been hoping to see, since I saw part of the same triptych Death and the Miser at the National Gallery of Art in D.C. last year).

I saw three plays, all of which were amazing — War (by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins, directed by Lileana Blain-Cruz), Chekov’s The Seagull (directed by Jessica Holt), and my favorite The Zero Scenario (by Ryan Campbell, directed by Sara Holdren).

I’m looking forward to visiting Yale again at the end of this January to see my sister’s costumes in Molière’s Don Juan.

Update

  1. I’ve been working very hard on new pages (41 through 95) of The Poet and the Flea for the past few months! I’ve completed the first few steps on pgs. 41 through 71 and completed inking pgs. 41 through 48. I haven’t started shading any of the new pages, but I’m hoping to start very soon.
  2. Last week, I completed and submitted my illustration of Elias Morris for A Raven Above Press’s new book Welsh in the Old West by Lorin Morgan-Richards. Check out this previous post for more information: A Raven Above Press’s “Welsh in the Old West” Project.
  3. I’m almost done inking an one-page comic entitled Strange But True to submit to a local newspaper. I really like how it’s turning out so far, and I’m hoping they’ll accept my submission! And maybe I’ll do more pages of Strange But True down the line…
  4. I’m supposed to hear this Wednesday whether or not I’ve been hired for a somewhat big freelance illustration project for a non-profit related book. I was hired to create a proposal for the book and they seem to be very excited about what I put together. Fingers crossed! :)
  5. According to director Mary Lachapelle, Death Is No Bad Friend made it to the top 20 of the Roy W. Dean Grant. Unfortunately, we were not grant winners, but they seem to want to still give us some kind of assistance for the film. Plus, we now know we’re headed in the right direction for other grants we’re planning on applying to. Everything’s coming together!
  6. Last week, I registered for the “Publication Design w/In Design” course at our local community college. I took a few classes there during high school and found them very beneficial. So I look forward to adding In Design to my list of skills.
  7. I’ve begun working on the applications for two summer programs specializing in publishing. They aren’t due until early next year, but I’d like to get them out of the way ASAP. They sound like absolutely amazing programs and, if I don’t get into them this time around, I’m planning on reapplying next year. We’ll see what happens!
  8. I’ve been doing some research and making some notes for my (not-so-distant) future publishing company Radiant Pessimist Press. It’s only bare bones for now, but you can check out my new blog: radiantpessimist.wordpress.com.
  9. Yesterday, I finally was able to clean and organize my studio. Can’t wait to get back to work!
  10. My main goal this week is to really sit down and concentrate on preparing for my talk at Yale University School of Drama. Also, I made an appointment with the Yale Center for British Art’s study room to examine a sampling of their incredible collection of original William Blake prints. I can’t wait!

Saturday, March 15th: Today’s Met Opera simulcast of Massenet’s Werther was beyond words! I read Goethe’s novel a few years back and found it very interesting. But the opera really brings the tragedy to a whole new level. And Jonas Kaufmann’s performance was absolutely captivating. :)

Tuesday, March 18th: Worked on new pages of graphic novel The First Reich.

Wednesday, March 19th: Wonderful Skype call with Jacqueline, DP of Death Is No Bad Friend. We bounced some really interesting ideas back and forth. And I look forward to further developing these ideas with her and director Mary.

Thursday, March 20th: I’ve been watching opera on YouTube and I just have to say that Verdi’s Don Carlos is one of the strangest operas I’ve encountered. Don Carlos falls in love with the woman who then becomes his stepmother, the Spanish Inquisition is running around causing trouble, and at the end Don Carlos is dragged down to hell by his dead grandpa to end his suffering… What!?

Friday, March 21st: My favorite Muppets Most Wanted moments (spoiler alert):

  • The Swedish Chef playing chess with death à la The Seventh Seal.
  • Miss Piggy’s Vivienne Westwood wedding dress.
  • Ricky Gervais in a lemur costume.

Saturday, March 22nd: Worked on new pages of graphic novel The First Reich.

Sunday, March 23rd: I had an amazing time watching The Grand Budapest Hotel! Wes Anderson is brilliant and Ralph Fiennes is one of my all-time favorite actors. And the whole ensemble was amazing — Tilda Swinton, Adrien Brody, Jeff Goldblum, etc. I can’t wait to see it again! :D
